is Google Plus (+) for you?

is Google Plus (+) for you?

Okay, where to begin…. This journey for me started back in my freshman year of college.  I received a phone call from a buddy of mine who was attending Colorado at Boulder, he called me and asked, “dude are you on facebook?”  I think the rest is history to anyone reading this.  A LOT has happened since the dawn of facebook and the demise of MySpace (uhhh you know MySpace right??)

I don’t even know where to really start to shed my enthusiasm with Google Plus (+).  SO far from what I have seen over the last few days it does everything I have every dreamed from a social communication tool and nothing wrong.  I know some people over at CNN have other opinions  I feel CNN is not giving Google credit where credit is due.  Did CNN bash Facebook from the get go… on the first week!!!! No I don’t ever remember reading anything about facebook in their first weeks or even first months.  I think its absolutely insane that someone would judge Google Plus in the first weeks and compare the feature functions to Facebook.

Zach Morris Phone

In no way shape or form does Google Plus compete with Facebook ( to say the least).  It does compete but the fact that CNN or anyone else compares it to facebook would be like someone saying that every new phone that comes out is compared to the brick phones that Zach Morris used to use, or even worse comparing every new phone to the iPhone.  Whole other discussion, okay so down to the real meat of this.

Google Plus might not be right for you but it is a better alternative to 1) people who aren’t familiar with a social network and or 2) who hate to get bombarded with ads.  Sure I haven’t totally ran through all the pros and cons so this will be an ongoing blog post.  For now, I want to share my enthusasim with all of you that this is the better alternative to something like facebook.

Some of the awesome features ( one of which is implemented on this blog) is the +1 button. Go ahead give it a go I will let you find out what its true power really is.  In the coming days/weeks I will continue to break out my pros and cons of Google Plus but give it a try and if you need an invite shoot me a comment and I will send you one.

  1. I love the social sharing and communication aspect of it. I have only 2 semi-major gripes –

1- I hate Picasa, and now it’s all I have on GPlus. Facebook has done wonders integrating it’s photo uploaders into everything (including iPhoto which I use a lot). Apparently I can get a plug in to do that, but I’ve never liked the interface, but maybe through GPlus I’ll give it a go.

2- Integrated GChat- Awesome. Integrated Inbox – Missing. I’d love a widget or even just a message counter for my Gmail AND one for Google Voice. That would allow me to make Google my Communication hub 100%, buhbye Facebook. I can GPlus, Gmail, GChat, and GVoice/Text people from one interface. That’s Social, and the web as it should be. At least as far as I’m concerned.

    • I just happened to read your post Matt today 2012-09-17. Maybe your thoughts have changed, but if not, I can suggest a couple Chrome extensions that solve the issues I think you asked to be solved. I have a Google voice and a Google mail extensions that give me the counts of unread mails or unheard messages and texts. They also give quick access to the apps.
